A Tribute to Frances Hammond

This week, Esperanza International lost one of the finest women that we, as an organization, have ever known.

Frances Hammond was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and much more—she was a friend to everyone—a living example of compassion and love. With her husband Roy, they brought Smiles to Life to Esperanza, and to those who most needed their services in the Dominican Republic. Since 2007 they have brought eight dental mission groups to work in some of our most impoverished communities.

In those eight trips, thousands received not only dental care, but also the warm smiles, hugs, and love that both Frances and Roy are so famous for giving.

Operation Rainbow visits Esperanza!

Operation Rainbow and its team of orthopedic surgeons recently visited Esperanza's programs in the Dominican Republic; volunteer Nathan Kennel shares his experience with the group and their work:

Many people serving in foreign countries question the effectiveness of short-term mission teams. Their cynicism is based on the fact that these teams often cost an inordinate amount of money, lack proper follow-up and rarely seem to do more than put a small dent in the vast need of a developing country. With this said, I know of a few hundred people in the city of San Pedro, the Dominican Republic, who would beg to differ with these skeptics.

Not your average teenager

Wilka Nuñez Artilez is not your normal seventeen year old. Wilka lives in Puerto Plata with her mother and has a very strange medical problem. She was born without the necessary cavities with which to urinate or deficate and has a very slow digestive system.
